Queensland election 2015: Greens leader Christine Milne ‘delighted’ with support
Queensland voters have delivered the Greens their highest vote ever in a state election, the party says.
The Greens secured 8.42 per cent of the vote in the Saturday poll, however the party failed to win a seat.
“There was a massive shift in public opinion in Queensland in this election,” party leader Christine Milne said. “I am delighted that Queenslanders delivered for the Greens the highest vote we have had in a state election.” Ms Milne said Queensland’s electoral system was flawed and called for an upper house in the sunshine state. “How ridiculous is it that the Greens achieved more primary votes than the Palmer United Party and the Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) thrown in together,” she said.
“And yet the KAP gets two seats.”That is because there is no proportional representation in Queensland.” In regards to the impact the Liberal National Party’s election defeat would have on its federal counterparts, Ms Milne said ousted Premier Campbell Newman and Prime Minister Tony Abbott were two peas in the same pod.
“Kick this mob out is Queensland’s message to Abbott and to Newman, and I think that’s the message the whole of Australia wanted to send as well,” she said.
